PETROLEUM REFINERY BUTAMER DRYERS UPGRADE
The client operates an independent petroleum refinery. The client hired Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to provide project management for completing the process design of replacement Butamer dryers and to provide project oversight for mechanical and structural design and equipment installation to ensure process objectives were accomplished.
PROCESS first reviewed the UOP standard design for mol-sieve dryers for applicability to client needs and then worked with the vessel fabricator to determine vessel design, cost, and schedule. PROCESS also worked with a third-party structural engineering firm to design the modifications to the support platforms and to ensure foundations were adequate. PROCESS provided preliminary process flow diagrams (PFDs) and worked with detailed designers to provide piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), piping isometrics, and material take off (MTO) sheets. PROCESS verified the new vessels per the approved construction drawings, and provided insulation specifications for the vessels and associated piping.
PROCESS worked with operations to review and redesign the Hydrofluoric Alkylation (HF Alky) unit's dryer regeneration cycles by identifying the maximum cycle flow rates, unit limits, and safety valve sizing in order to provide a new regeneration schedule for operations to use. PROCESS also provided vessel loading diagrams to assist the client in ordering the proper amount of mol-sieve and in the proper loading of the dryers.
This project was on a tight execution schedule in order to meet a scheduled maintenance turnaround and PROCESS was able to meet all schedule milestones. The information resulting from this project was summarized in a project report submitted to the client.
