Project Synopsis
Check relief device sizing for the fire case scenario on an impurities absorption column at a specialty chemical manufacturing facility.Project Summary
IMPURITIES ABSORPTION COLUMN RELIEF DEVICE EVALUATION
Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was subcontracted by the client, an engineering and design firm, to evaluate an existing relief valve for the ultimate client, a specialty chemicals manufacturing facility, for an existing impurities absorption column designed to remove ppm levels of impurities. PROCESS verified the sizing of the relief device for this column. The ultimate client had conflicting information as to whether or not the relief valve needed to be sized for two-phase flow in a fire case scenario. PROCESS concluded that the fluid did not meet required two-phase calculations, thereby saving the client from having to replace the valve.
PROCESS utilized its proprietary in-house relief device capacity computer program, which includes calculations based on the guidelines in American Petroleum Institute (API) Recommended Practices (RP) 520 and 521, to determine the pressure relief requirements for this application.
PROCESS supplied the client with the relief valve sizing calculations as well as datasheets that could be used to obtain quotes from vendors for the relief valves. PROCESS also suggested specific relief devices represented in vendor literature.
