Project Synopsis
Review the design of the vent collection, nitrogen supply skid, and scrubbing system in a Propylene Oxide unit to prevent possible backflow of such contaminants.
Project Summary
The client, a chemical manufacturer, uses Propylene Oxide (PO) in one of its production units as a raw material. PO is very reactive in the presence of certain contaminants. As such, the client contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to review the design of the vent collection, nitrogen supply skid, and scrubbing system in the unit to prevent possible backflow of such contaminants.
In addition to those works, PROCESS was tasked to evaluate eight safety relief devices in the production unit, followed by an evaluation of the benefit of upgrading the unit flare header size from 8” to 12”.
This above work scope resulted in the following project deliverables:
- Project report detailing the hydraulics performed during normal venting and simultaneous venting scenarios with recommendations to prevent backflow of contaminants
- Safety Integrity Level (SIL-2) system design to prevent backflow from the reactor to the PO day tank
- Project report outlining the recommended process configurations, sketches, P&ID markups, and related modifications to provide an inherently safe design (i.e., preventing a “caustic” reverse flow scenario from the Scrubber system
- Project report including the review and validation of the new dedicated nitrogen supply system for transfer operations
- Safety relief device technical evaluations with supporting calculations for eight safety relief devices
- Flare header technical evaluation report associated with the upgraded flare header piping.
