Project Synopsis
Assist an engineering company client with a comprehensive utilities study of a National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) production facility that included potable water, chilled water, cooling tower water, demineralized water, steam and condensate, natural gas, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, compressed air, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer were studied.
Project Summary
Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was subcontracted by a national engineering company to assist in the completion of a comprehensive utilities study for the M&O contractor, who operates the facility for the NNSA. The utilities study was required for the development of a Master Site Plan for the complex.
The scope of work included twelve (12) mechanical utilities that are distributed or collected across the site. Potable water, chilled water, cooling tower water, demineralized water, steam and condensate, natural gas, argon, nitrogen, hydrogen, compressed air, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer were studied. The electrical distribution system was evaluated separately by the client. To complete the utilities study, the following inputs were examined:
- Current state of existing utility systems including age, layout, users, capacity, pressure/ temperature/flow requirements, piping and equipment condition, materials of construction, operability and controls, unplanned events, technology utilized, etc.
- Recently completed, in-process, and planned future utility projects
- Timeline and layout for both existing facility demolitions and new facility installations and the corresponding impact on utilities
- Best technology available for required utilities
- Regulatory mandates affecting federal facilities.
PROCESS personnel analyzed these inputs and developed a plan for each of the utilities that will adequately support future mission requirements for the site. The plan was documented in a detailed report with short-range, mid-range, and long-range plot plans and timelines. The plan was also summarized in a presentation for M&O contractor site leadership.
