Provide process engineering review during the detail design phase of a batch facility expansion project to ensure the process integrity of the design remained intact.

Project Summary


The client owns and operates a batch specialty metal manufacturing facility and had previously contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to execute a complete process design for an eight (8) fold expansion of a batch specialty metal production facility.  For this same project, PROCESS was later retained to assist during the detail design portion of the project, primarily to ensure that the process integrity of the design remained intact during detail design.

Major project tasks included:

  • Review of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Review of equipment bid packages
  • Review of final expanded plant equipment layout drawings (general arrangement drawings).

PROCESS reviewed approximately 70 P&IDs and compared them to the P&IDs PROCESS had provided during the previous process design phase and made sure that the equipment design, process controls, and process piping was consistent with, or functionality equivalent to, that specified during process design.

The major equipment bid packages (reverse osmosis systems, acid neutralization system, particulate removal system, and evaporator system) were reviewed again for consistency with the original process design.

PROCESS revised the plant layout drawings to help minimize required piping and to ensure that the equipment was laid out in an optimal process fashion for a plant of this type.  During the course of the project, PROCESS identified several instances in which the detail design deviated from the original intent of the project and was able to correct the design prior to construction and startup.
