Project Synopsis

Review operations of existing butane vaporizer associated with railcar unloading facilities to determine overpressure scenarios and design pressure relief devices for protection.

Project Summary

PETROLEUM REFINERY BUTANE VAPORIZER SYSTEMS OVERPRESSURE EVALUATION

The client operates an independent petroleum refinery in the U.S.  The client hired Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to review the operations of an existing butane vaporizer associated with railcar unloading facilities to determine the overpressure scenarios associated with the facilities and to design pressure relief devices for overpressure protection.

PROCESS reviewed the piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) to determine all of the applicable overpressure scenarios and to identify the controlling scenario. PROCESS then reviewed the heat exchanger, railcar vessel, and piping design ratings to determine the proper safety valve set point.  PROCESS then calculated the maximum vaporization rate for the exchanger configuration and heating medium for the purpose of sizing the relief device.  Finally, PROCESS provided the client with marked-up P&IDs showing the new safety facilities and tie-in locations along with the new safety valve specifications.

The information resulting from this project was summarized in a project report submitted to the client.
