Project Synopsis

Develop process instrumentation specifications for a new crude unit revamp project.

Project Summary

PETROLEUM REFINERY CRUDE UNIT INSTRUMENT SPECIFICATIONS PREPARATION

The client, an independent oil refining company, contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to provide support in specifying instrumentation as part of a crude atmospheric unit revamp project.  Specifically, PROCESS was asked to aid in the sizing of flow meter orifices and temperature elements for the project.

In support of this effort, PROCESS utilized project PFDs and P&IDs to determine service and installation requirements for each device.  For flow orifices, bore sizes were calculated based on operating requirements given in the PFDs and the installed line sizes given in the P&IDs.  Temperature element and thermowell installations were evaluated to determine required lengths, process connections, and normal operating temperature ranges.

The requirement for each device was provided to the client for incorporation into their instrument index and to aid in final instrument purchase specifications.
