Project Synopsis

Develop detailed process design documents for three (3) new lysine production lines at a U.S. manufacturing facility.

Project Summary

DETAILED PROCESS DESIGN SERVICES FOR NEW SPECIALTY ANIMAL NUTRITIONAL INGREDIENT PRODUCTION LINES

The client, a world-wide animal nutritional ingredients and personal care industry chemical production company, contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to develop detailed process design documents for three (3) new animal feed additive (lysine) production lines at one of their U.S. manufacturing facilities.  The primary purpose of this project was to generate Issued for Construction (IFC) P&IDs for the client to issue to contractors, review and comment on major equipment submittal packages, and provide support for detailed design to the client during the course of the project.  Project activities to this end included:

  • Final Process Design Basis Preparation which involved finalization of the baseline information governing the development of the detailed process design package.
  • Preparation of P&IDs which involved utilizing the information gathered and generated previously, as well as preliminary equipment details, to develop P&IDs that reflected all of the modifications for all three new lines.
  • Preparation of Equipment Lists that showed the new process equipment that was required, and an Instrument List that showed all major instruments and controls that would be required by the process.
  • Equipment and Instrument Datasheets preparation which involved the development of process design level (duty) specifications for all pieces of process equipment and process instruments for the new lines. Solids handling equipment included such items as bulk bag unloaders, bulk bag loaders, screeners, powder mixers, fluid bed dryers, pneumatic conveying, dust collectors, pan coaters, vibratory conveyors, etc.
  • Pressure Relief Device calculations involved sizing seventeen (17) new relief devices for the new production lines.  Use of an in-house computer program to evaluate potential relief scenarios per API/ANSI standards, define the controlling scenario and relief valve flow, select a valve size, and provide preliminary sizing for the inlet and discharge piping was utilized.  Final relief valve sizing was completed during detail design (after all equipment had been purchased and piping design was complete).
