Project Synopsis
Provide process engineering support to address open action items from a previously performed Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA) at a specialty chemicals manufacturing facility.
Project Summary
The client, a specialty chemicals company in the Northwest United States, contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to provide engineering support to address open action items from a previously performed Dust Hazards Analysis (DHA). The following tasks were included as part of the DHA action items support:
- Updated DHA Action Items Resolution Summary Table listing the action items and providing a summary level description of each recommended solution.
- DHA Action Item Review and Report that involved performing an NFPA compliance review, including equipment and instrumentation design and deflagration protection, that was used to generate recommended solutions.
- Where necessary, an estimated implementation cost with supporting vendor data/quotes was generated for each solution. The following equipment and systems were part of the review:
- Material transfer conveyors, including bucket elevators and screw conveyors.
- Vessels in the facility greater than 8 ft3 in volume.
- Fluidized Bed Dryer operation.
- Development of a piping specification for food grade flexible hoses and connectors addressing NFPA requirements.
- Performing an Area Electrical Classification Study. This included a site visit to evaluate the existing operations and develop an electrical classification drawing in AutoCAD showing recommended Division and Class ratings overlaid onto the process area equipment arrangement layout drawing.
