Project Synopsis

Provide multiple technology and process design reviews of a client’s pilot-plant core technology regarding novel approaches for utilizing electro-extraction to recover post-consumer electronics black mass metals.

Project Summary

The client is a startup company that is developing novel approaches for electro-extraction recovering of post-consumer black mass metals.  The client designed and constructed a scalable pilot recovery electro-extraction system and contracted Process Engineering International, LLC (PROCESS) to conduct multiple technology and process design reviews of their core technology and connected process systems.

PROCESS provided the following services to the client:

  • Guidance for the development of distribution and control systems for the transition from pilot-scale to full-scale operations
  • Assessment of scrubbing and inerting systems scope and alternatives for improved efficiency and process safety
  • Conducted safety reviews, energy optimization assessment, and process and instrumentation assessment of pyrolysis and pilot systems
  • Provided technical support to develop marketing packages for investor brochures.

In addition, PROCESS worked with the client to prepare the following:

  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) evaluations
  • Hydraulic and materials distribution alternatives evaluations
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic models for alternative comparisons
  • Slurry particle size and velocity evaluation for settling
  • Instrument and dynamic controls evaluation
  • Detailed design hydraulic and pneumatics header evaluations
  • Process Safety Hazard Analysis (HAZOP).

Once the technical advisory role was completed, PROCESS transitioned into a procedure preparation, and a commissioning/startup support role, while conducting additional studies as requested.
