Project Synopsis

Perform a Process Design Review and Safety Review of an existing elutriation system, i.e. review, document, and evaluate the existing process.

Project Summary

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted to provide process engineering services to complete a Process Design Review and Safety Review of an existing Elutriation System at a US plant for a world-wide manufacturer of chemicals and consumer goods.  The purpose of this project was to review, document, and evaluate the existing elutriation process which has been in operation for several years.

The elutriation process is a continuous process of particle size separation for production of a specialty silica.  It consists of varying sized tanks, pumps, and reverse osmosis water flows to size the silica into different size fractions as per the process design.

The following tasks were completed:

  • Design Basis Preparation
  • Review of existing systems design and documentation. This involved PROCESS reviewing the existing engineering and plant operations data related to the elutriation system processes.
  • Generate Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs)
  • Generated a mass and energy balance (M&EB)
  • Generated Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
  • Prepared P&IDs of the existing process.
