Project Synopsis

Provide an independent process engineering evaluation of an improved plant design for the manufacture of food ingredients based on an existing operating facility in Europe.

Project Summary

REVIEW OF A PROCESS DESIGN FOR AN IMPROVED AND RELOCATED CHEMICAL PRODUCTION FACILITY

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted by the client, a global producer of ingredients for food industries, animal feed, and cosmetics, to perform a site visit to their animal food additive manufacturing facility in Europe in order to independently evaluate the process design for an improved duplicate production line to be constructed in the U.S.  As a part of this project, the following tasks were accomplished:

  • Process design review
  • Site visit for design verification
  • Identification of design differences and associated risks
  • Report generation and project summary preparation.

PROCESS reviewed the process design documents (done by others) including the Heat and Material Balances, Cycle Time Analysis, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and expected production upgrades to be included in a new production line to be built in the United States.  A trip to the operating facility in Europe was performed where operators were interviewed, current operations were reviewed, and unit operations were inspected.

PROCESS developed a report summarizing notes associated with the tasks performed and recommended areas for improvement. As a part of the report, differences between European operations and the process design for the new U.S. line, as well as the associated risks, were identified.
