Project Synopsis

Review and comment on potential flare siting locations at a gas pipeline terminal facility.

Project Summary

REVIEW OF POTENTIAL FLARE SITES

The client, a regional engineering company, was asked by the ultimate client, a pipeline operating company, to provide an assessment of potential areas for relocating an existing flare system for a pipeline terminal facility in the Southwestern U.S.  More specifically, the client had identified two potential sites where a flare could be relocated and wanted a review of standards in an effort to validate the chosen sites.  The project was subcontracted by the client to Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS).

The following tasks were accomplished by PROCESS in an effort to validate the potential sites for the flare:

  • A review of API 521 “Pressure-Relieving and Depressuring Systems” and API 537 “Flare Details for General Refinery and Petrochemicals Service”
  • A review of API 537 ‘Flare Details for General Refinery and Petrochemical Service”.

Applicable results and recommendations from the tasks stated above (based on the API guidelines shown above) along with the documentation of general safety concerns were summarized in a written letter report and submitted to the client.
