Perform an independent, high-level review of design progress using the Process Design Review Index (PDRI) checklist for the design of a Commercial Demonstration Unit for an environmentally friendly, synthetic fuels production process.
Project Summary
The client operates a pilot plant in Canada that has been in operation for several years. After achieving positive results in the pilot facility, collecting necessary data, and receiving additional funding, the client is now designing a Commercial Demonstration Unit for an environmentally friendly, synthetic fuels production process.
The client contracted Process Engineering International, LLC (PROCESS) to perform an independent, high level review of the design progress using the Process Design Review Index (PDRI) checklist. The PDRI checklist allows a numerical value to be assigned to the process design / detailed design efforts indicating how much progress has been accomplished during the process design. The resulting numerical score is then used by decision makers as an indicator of when various stage gates (FEL-0, 1, 2, and 3) have been achieved and when the project may be ready to move forward into detailed design and construction.
PROCESS reviewed the PDRI checklist and compared all elements to examples of various design documents provided by the client. Impressions of progress for each element of the PDRI were documented and a comprehensive report was developed that indicated where gaps were thought to be present and where the independent review differed from the client’s internal PDRI reviews and scores.
The client used the external review to better understand where information may be missing and where the PDRI scores might be improved. After addressing some of the gaps identified in the assessment completed by PROCESS, the client plans on having PROCESS revisit the design information to perform an in-depth PDRI review that is suitable for presentation to high-level decision makers.
