Project Synopsis

Size relief valves associated with six heat exchangers at an independent petroleum refiner.

Project Summary

INDEPENDENT PETROLEUM REFINERY SAFETY VALVES SIZING

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted by the client, an independent petroleum refinery, to perform safety valve sizing services for relief devices associated with 6 heat exchangers located in the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and the Extract Unit.  As a part of this project, the following tasks were accomplished:

  • Performed sizing calculations and provided documentation for 5 pressure safety valves (PSVs)
  • Performed hydraulic calculations to adequately size inlet and outlet piping for the new PSVs
  • Developed custom documentation for 2 heat exchangers that did not have a credible pressure relief scenario.

PROCESS utilized its licensed commercial simulation software’s hydraulics package and chemical/physical component database along with its proprietary in-house relief device capacity computer program, with calculations based on the guidelines in American Petroleum Institute (API) Standards 520 and 521, to determine the pressure relief requirements for this application.

PROCESS supplied the client with customized pressure relief device (PRD) sizing documentation packages that included safety device calculations and relief valve equipment datasheets that could be used to obtain quotes from vendors.  Also, as part of the evaluation, it was noted that two of the heat exchangers did not have a credible relief scenario per API 521 guidelines and supporting documentation was provided.
