Project Synopsis

Provide process engineering services to assist in the evaluation of potential materials of construction (MOC) for a new extraction tank to replace the original Hastelloy C-22 tank for  a paint and pigments company.

Project Summary

The client, a paint and pigments company, contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to provide process engineering services to assist in the evaluation of potential materials of construction (MOC) for a new extraction tank.  The client was planning to move the process to another building due to age and damage to the current building housing this process.  This move would require field erecting a new batch extraction tank.  Given the high cost of the original Hastelloy C-22 tank, the client wished to evaluate other MOCs for service in this application.  The application is a batch process which utilizes sulfuric acid in a wide range of concentrations, depending on the product being produced. Project tasks included:

  • Design Basis development which involved the determination of the range of sulfuric acid concentrations as well as the existence of any other compounds that would affect the life of the new tank.
  • Literature search and vendor discussions to determine sulfuric acid corrosion rates on the MOCs under consideration as well as acceptable operating windows (acid concentration, temperature, etc.) that would affect the life span of the new tank.
  • Solicitation of budgetary cost proposals from vendors for each of the MOCs under consideration.
  • Development of a scoring matrix relating the pertinent information for each MOC into a ranking of risk to the overall project.  The lowest risk score would be the recommended MOC.
  • Summation of the evaluation methodology, gathered information, risk matrix and recommendations in a final project report.
  • Process engineering support of the client project team including multiple project calls and interfacing with the various vendors/fabricators.
