Project Synopsis

Evaluate replacing a refinery’s kerosene stabilization tower with a refurbished existing tower available on the used equipment market.

Project Summary

PETROLEUM REFINERY KEROSENE TOWER REPLACEMENT EVALUATION STUDY

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted by a small independent petroleum refining client to evaluate a used distillation column for replacing an existing kerosene stabilization (kero stabilizer) column.  A process simulation of the kerosene tower was developed using PROCESS‘ licensed commercial computer process simulation software CHEMCAD to evaluate the used column and internals for suitability as a replacement.  PROCESS evaluated the column diameter, height, nozzle locations, and internals and made recommendations for changes to the column.  Various types of packing, both structured and random, were evaluated and PROCESS recommended structured packing and calculated the height required to achieve the desired process specifications.  Nozzle modifications to the column were recommended to optimize the feed location and facilitate reflux flow.
