Project Synopsis

Provide a hydraulic evaluation of a specialty chemicals industrial vent system and make recommendations to maintain system capacity.

Project Summary

SPECIALTY CHEMICALS INDUSTRIAL VENT HEADER CAPACITY EVALUATION

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted by the client, an engineering company, to provide a hydraulic evaluation of a specialty chemicals industrial vent system.  The ultimate client, a titanium pigment production company providing chemical intermediates to the paints and coatings industry, had increased production capacity and was adding a new production unit to an existing vent system.  PROCESS was tasked with determining if the existing system is adequate.

PROCESS was provided the equipment drawings, vent rates and compositions, and piping drawings.  PROCESS used its commercial computer process simulation software (CHEMCAD) hydraulic package to analyze headers, sub-headers, and tail pipes for overpressure (undercapacity) problems.

PROCESS determined that the expanded plant would require a larger sub-header to meet capacity requirements and that several existing process tank tail pipes needed to be increased in size to reduce backpressure.  PROCESS provided the new sizes for the piping that were required to restore the system capacity.
