Project Synopsis

Evaluate the cooling water system design for an activated carbon pilot unit.

Project Summary

The client is a startup activated carbon supplier that is developing novel approaches for pyrolyzing a diverse set of biomass feedstocks. The client is piloting multiple sites globally to expand production capabilities and prove alternative technologies. Process Engineering International, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted to serve in a advisory process engineering role to assess the cooling water system design for one of their pilot units.
PROCESS provided the following services to the client:

• A hydraulic assessment of supply, demand, and return for the entire cooling loop
• A review of the expected heat demand versus cooling tower sizing
• A recommendations report for improvement of the cooling loop system
• An instrumentation and valve improvement assessment
• A red-lined piping and instrumentation diagram for the cooling loop showing recommended options.

The client is implementing the recommendations and is adapting processes, controls, and installation plans to address known gaps in the cooling loop. The client has also subsequently engaged PROCESS on additional projects related to process safety, process improvement, controls assessments, and installation gap analyses projects.
