Project Synopsis

Provide independent 3rd party design review of a large wastewater treatment plant prior to bid submission by the client.

Project Summary

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT PROCESS DESIGN REVIEW

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted by the client, an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm that services clients primarily in the power industry, to perform a high level process design review of a proposed wastewater treatment plant for the ultimate client, a newly designed coal-fed power plant using Integrated Gasification Combined-Cycle (IGCC) technology with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

The primary intent of this review was to provide a technical risk analysis of the overall system design and proposed operation, with emphasis placed on the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system due to its customized approach to treatment.  The client desired PROCESS‘ opinion as to the technical viability of the plant, to the extent possible based on the information available at the time, prior to the client’s commitment to bid on the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the plant.  Unit operations included clarifiers, solid/liquid separation (filter presses, centrifuges), water treatment polishing steps (ion exchange, reverse osmosis), and flash tank crystallizers. Documents reviewed included PFDs, draft P&IDs, preliminary plot plans, and high level water balance flowsheets, primarily developed by others.  PROCESS issued a report detailing its findings, including several design and operational uncertainties associated with the design to date.

This review was performed within the one week timeframe requested by the client.
