Project Synopsis

Provide engineering services to perform a PHA of a low level radioactive waste packaging and processing facility.

Project Summary

PROCESS HAZARDS ANALYSIS (PHA) OF A LOW LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE PACKAGING AND PROCESSING FACILITY

The client operates a low level radioactive waste (rad waste) packaging and processing facility which utilizes several different technologies.  Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted to provide engineers experienced in process safety and risk management who were part of a process hazards analysis (PHA) team for the client.  The team performed a PHA of the processes at the facility using the What-If methodology.  The objective of the PHA was to discover potential accidents (i.e., radiological material releases, explosions, fires, etc.) that could directly impact employees, the public, and/or the environment.  PROCESS documented the PHA to reasonably fulfill all pertinent regulatory requirements.

The following processes were included within the scope of the PHA:

  • Commercial Certification and Repackaging
  • Cutting and Sizing
  • Lead Processing
  • Metal Melt Process
  • Incineration.

Industry Type

  • Nuclear waste processing

Utilized Skills

  • Nuclear process familiarity
  • Process hazards analysis execution
