Project Synopsis

Provide an engineering evaluation to help resolve fouling issue in the mineral spirits recycling fractionation unit at a use oil recycling facility.

Project Summary

RECYCLED MINERAL SPIRITS FRACTIONATION SYSTEM FOULING EVALUATION

The client, a waste oil recycling company, contracted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to troubleshoot their existing mineral spirits processing operations at one of their plant operation facilities.  The mineral spirits process included evaporators followed by condensers that would process feedstock prior to fractional distillation.  PROCESS modeled the system using commercial simulation software to determine if the existing equipment could be operated in a manner to reduce fouling and corrosion issues and still meet quality specifications.

Project tasks included the following:

  • Providing an overall simulation of the process including creation of pseudo components to represent the mineral spirits composition
  • Providing a detailed simulation (tray by tray) of the column to evaluate the feed rate based on the flooding rate in the column.

PROCESS provided the client with the simulation output, the results of the detailed column simulation, and a brief report that summarized findings and recommendations.
