Project Synopsis
Develop an FEL-1 level preliminary process design and cost estimate for both a pilot and commercial scale process to produce Polycarbosilane based on scaling up from lab data for a defense related technology and manufacturing company.
Project Summary
The client, a defense and diversified technologies company, contacted Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) to scale up a lab-scale process producing Polycarbosilane, a precursor to a ceramic infused polymer, to a Pilot and also to a Full-Scale facility. The purpose of the project was specifically to develop an FEL-1 level preliminary process design package and provide a +/- 50% Estimate.
Project tasks included:
- Preparation of a Process Narrative document for both the Pilot and Full-Scale operations. The Process Narrative provides a preliminary basis of design.
- Preparation of preliminary Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) that depicted the overall process flow and all major equipment.
- Work with multiple vendors for online instrumentation to predict reaction finish and product quality. Help negotiate trial offers with the instrumentation vendors for the lab scale unit.
- Recommend and schedule experiments with the client in order to generate the appropriate data needed to develop a more sound cost estimate.
