Project Synopsis
Develop a computer process simulation model for predicting system operating parameters for various incinerator hazardous feed rates and compositions.Project Summary
TSCA INCINERATOR PROCESS COMPUTER MODEL DEVELOPMENT
The client owns and operates a Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Incinerator for the treatment of hazardous and mixed wastes. Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was contracted by the client to develop a comprehensive computer process simulation model for the purposes of predicting system operating temperatures, flow rates, stream compositions, utilities usage rates, and stack emissions (including metals and radionuclides) for various incinerator feed rates and compositions. The simulation is to be used for process debottlenecking and operational optimization as well.
PROCESS’ project tasks included:
- On-site operational observation and process engineering and operational data assimilation
- Simulation model configuration and graphics development
- Simulation model testing and calibration
- Simulation model documentation preparation.
The model utilized Microsoft Excel software and was configured such that process input and calculation functions could easily be effected by engineering and operations personnel. In addition, process model documentation was developed that included a detailed model description as well as instructions for use of the model. System engineering and operational data was used to test and calibrate the model. The model included a 1,200 compound database from which system feed stream compositions and heating values could be simulated as well as simulation blocks for the following TSCA Incinerator unit operations:
- Rotary kiln
- Secondary combustion chamber
- Combustion offgas quench chamber
- Venturi scrubber
- Packed bed scrubber
- Ionizing wet scrubber
- Induced draft (ID) fan and stack.
