Project Synopsis

Process design and engineering services for a waterless biodiesel production facility based on technologies provided by others.

Project Summary

WATERLESS BIODIESEL PLANT PROCESS DESIGN

Process Engineering Associates, LLC (PROCESS) was subcontracted by the client, an engineering and construction company, to provide process design and engineering services for a waterless biodiesel production facility based on technologies provided by the ultimate client, a biodiesel production equipment manufacturer.  Specifically, PROCESS was contracted to develop and prepare the following:

  • Mass and energy balances
  • Process flow diagrams (PFDs)
  • Piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Equipment, line, and instrument lists
  • Equipment duty specifications.

PROCESS used its licensed commercial computer process simulation software, CHEMCAD, to develop mass and energy balances for the new facility based on operating data provided by the client.  The resulting design information was then included in PFDs prepared for the process.  Data from the simulations were also used to create equipment duty specifications for heat exchangers, pumps, and columns.

PROCESS also revised the client’s preliminary P&IDs to include line sizing and numbering as well as process additions and modifications.  Equipment, line, and instrument lists were then prepared to capture requirements for the new process.

This project was performed on a fast-track basis to meet stringent client schedule requirements.  PROCESS completed its work on time and under budget.
